Turkaman rug is a type of hand-woven rug that basically originates from Central Asia. Identifying the original Turkaman tribal rugs produced in large numbers is useful for export, mainly in Iran and Pakistan nowadays. The original Turkaman rugs were produced by the Turkaman tribes, who are the main ethnic group in Turkmenistan and are also found in Iran and Afghanistan. They are mainly used for a variety of purposes, including tent rugs, door hangers and cushions in various sizes.
The art of making traditional Turkaman rugs has been registered by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019 in the list of representatives of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind.
Almost all Turkaman rugs have been produced by nomadic tribes almost entirely with local materials, such as wool from herds, and vegetables or other natural dyes from the land. They use geometric designs which are mostly differed from one tribe to another. The most famous designs are Yamut, Arsari, Sarik, Salwar and Teke.
The size of nomadic rugs is limited to what can be done on nomadic portable devices. Larger rugs have always been produced in the countryside which can be seen more recently.
